Sticker Story --2

To day i read a news item in Times Of India about some commotion which took place at Kolkata airport due to a missing security sticker from the bag of a passenger. While the passenger was insisting that he had duly got his bag scanned through the X-ray baggage scanner at the airport, the security officials were not allowing him to go ahead to board the aircraft unless his bag carried the security sticker.

This news gave me the feeling of Déjà vu , as I was witness to an exactly similar incident in March 2007 at Mumbai airport about which i have written in my blog earlier (hence the current title " Sticker Story --2"). Though at Kolkata the incident led to a major showdown between the passenger and the security officials, resulting into heated exchanges and also scuffle between both the parties, nothing of that sort had happened at Mumbai , except for causing a little embarrassment to the concerned passenger and some amusement amongst the crowd around the counter at his cost. But then Kolkata has its lion's share of 'Argumentative Indians', (as Amratya Sen calls us).

The Mumbai incident was actually amusing one as the sticker was found stuck on the trousers of the passenger instead of his bag. To read the Mumbai episode please click

Sometimes its that little bit of detail, a bit of paper, a bit of print, of that print exactly that we need and do not find when we need it :)

Nice peek into matters that make a difference finally, both here, and the Sticker Story one too. Read it :)

Thank you Usha, yes the absence of such small itmes can leave one in much embrassing a position some times. And thanks for reading the earlier episode too which i found more interesting.

Bongs are argumentative news in that...that it came to manhandling however is sad ....since one does expect some bhodrota from the bangali bhodrolok.

Pinku, apnee ekdom theek bole chhin. i have spent three and a half years at Kolkata now. The people here easily get into argument but if one probes a little deeper one will find a heart of butter which will melt with slightest amount of warmth. Argument comes to them naturally but they actually mean no harm, except for an occasional fisticuff here and there.

why didnt the passenger just go back and get it scanned again. We really do fly off the handle rather easily these days.

'How Do We Know' you are right There is always a tussle between security and convenience and we have to sacrifice a bit of convenience to ensure better security in todays scenario at least.

The need for checking the sticker is still understandable, but what amuses me is that before boarding the flight, the security personnel look for the stamp on the tag in your hand luggage. If that's missing, one has to go back and get it stamped. I can't understand the relevance of this exercise!

Is it Vikas Pandey (commonwealth)? if yes then "itney din tum kahan rahey" ??

i remember that incident that i read on your blog.
BTW i have not come across many un-argumentative bongs. They can even lock you up for arguing. Ask me!!!

Manpreet. Who dared lock you up. Can we have it in your next post?

wow the airport security is becoming tougher tougher like the amount of liquids u can have!!! which i find weird it s not like u re gonna kill someone with a big toothpaste tube right! :P

Cess, i think the criminals, having found out that they can't carry bombs and pistols into the aircrafts to stage a highjack, they started using unasuming materials which may be otherwise harmless and allowed into the aircraft but once mixed with each other it may make explosive compound. And our security fellows then bent backwards to even ban the docile toothpastes and cold creams too.
